A Guide to the Records of
The Lake Tahoe Area Council (LTAC)
Collection No. NC1200
The Lake Take Area Countil
The Lake Tahoe Area Council was established in 1958 with the sponsorship of the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation of Nevada. A private, non-political and non-profit organization, the Council was chartered under the laws of Nevada and dedicated to the preservation and orderly development of the Lake Tahoe Basin. It had the established goals of seeking cooperation between private land owners and governmental agencies, and providing leadership and assistance in solving basin-wide problems of planning, land use, park and recreation development, pollution control and soil conservation. The Council sought to develop a practical conservation program which would not prohibit development, but instead give it an intelligent direction so the quality of Lake Tahoe and its environment would be enhanced, not diminished.
The Council was governed by a Board of Directors of no less than 30 members and an Executive Committee of no more than 21 members. As a non-profit public service organization, it derived its operating funds from annual membership dues, which were utilized in making studies and reports, as well as in related organized efforts to protect the overall environment of the Lake Tahoe Basin, and the quality of the Lake water.
The Council has been instrumental in basin-wide air and water pollution studies, stronger coordination between government entities, and concerns for special planning features.
The Lake Tahoe Area Council was disbanded in 1975 due to lack of operating funds.
Scope and Content
The records of the Lake Tahoe Area Council (LTAC) were donated to the Special Collections Department in 1986 by Jere E. Williams, president of the Lake Tahoe Area Council. The collection dates from 1957 to 1980 and has a volume of 22 cubic feet. There are no restrictions on access to these records.
When received by Special Collections, the arrangement of this collection reflected the haste with which the LTAC office shut down. The collection was examined, reduced, and reorganized. The contents include LTAC background information, by-laws, abstracts, minutes, membership files, correspondence, reports, public relations, press releases, administrative files, plans for and research about Lake Tahoe, legislation related to Lake Tahoe, environmental files, recreation, transportation, financial accounts and maps. The collection also contains material from other regional organizations such as the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), the Tahoe Regional Planning Commission (TRPC) and the Lake Tahoe Research Coordination Board, as well as material generated by state, local and private groups in California and Nevada, pertaining to Lake Tahoe.
The title pages of published materials were photocopied and filed into Series 11 of this collection. Those published materials were removed from the collection and catalogued into the Special Collections book stacks.
Related manuscript collections include the records of the Lake Tahoe Area Research Coordination Board (82-07), Thomas A. Cooke/Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (82-37), the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (82-60), and Walter E. MacKenzie (NC1060).
