About Google Scholar

Google Scholar searches for peer-reviewed books, journal articles, preprints, proceedings, and other resources from many academic publishers, professional societies, and universities.

Google Scholar is a general search tool, not limited to any specific academic discipline. Results may be particularly useful for interdisciplinary topics. However, if your search words are commonly used in several fields of research, and you are interested in just one of them, results may be unfocused. When this happens, use our Subject Guides to identify a good subject index, such as PSYCInfo or EconLit.

Step 1 - Find Resources in Google Scholar

Off-campus users: To enable SFX Find It@UNR links in search results, set Institutional Access in Google Scholar Preferences to University of Nevada, Reno. Search results are not limited to UNR resources or Library holdings.
You can set Google Scholar Preferences to let you import citations into a bibliography manager, such as EndNote.
Find It@UNR links provide a menu of access options for articles and books available to UNR users.

Step 2 - Access Resources Available to UNR Users

Search results in Google Scholar may include some items that are free online and others that are restricted or require payment. Check to see if the Library owns or has access to restricted items! Don't pay for something the Library has licensed for UNR users!

Books

Books that are not available online will have a Library Search link that lets you search WorldCat to find out if the book is owned by the Library. Alternatively, search the Library Catalog by title:

If the book is not in the Catalog, try Link+ for fast delivery of books from 30 California libraries. If it's not in Link+, you may request an Interlibrary Loan.

Journals

If you find a journal that is not free online, see if the Library subscribes to the online or print version:

Try our Citation Finder to quickly locate a specific article. Citation Finder does not search every journal to which the library has access, but it's worth a try and may save you time! If Citation Finder does not locate your article, search for the journal using the search box, above.

If the article you want is not available online or in the Library, use ILLiad to request an Interlibrary Loan.
